The Daily Cutter – November 2, 2012

Wagonhound Land and Livestock has stepped to the plate to boost the added money in the Open 5/6 Year old from $25,000 to $35,000 for this year’s Golden Hills Auto Center Futurity. The PCCHA gratefully welcomes the support of Wagonhound, which is a historic working cattle and horse ranch situated on more than 150,000 acres in Douglas, Wyoming on the east edge of the Rocky Mountains.

Known for its top American Quarter Horse and Red Angus breeding operations and elite hunting outfitters, Wagonhound Land and Livestock dates back to the 1800’s when cattle drives came up from Texas and pioneers traveled the Oregon Trail. As settlers moved across the land, a tough-to-cross creek became well-known as the Wagon Hound Creed because many wagons broke their hounds as they crossed. Today, this creek is located only yards from Wagonhound Headquarters, and the ranch brand, “quarter circle, bar, quarter circle,” is the territorial brand that loosely resembles a wagon hound. Wagonhound’s business operations are comprised of the four divisions of Cattle, Horse, Farming and Outfitting. The Cattle division includes a foundation herd of 2,500 head producing some of the finest commercial Red Angus, selected and managed to produce high quality replacement heifers and the highest grade beef.

The Farming Division includes the production of approximately 20,000 tons of premium alfalfa annually covering 4,000 acres and rotating crops of corn silage, barley hay, barley grain and oats.

People come from all over the world to experience Wagon-hound’s Outfitting Division, which is anchored by the trophy elk on the ranch, but there is also hunting for mule and whitetail deer, antelope, bear, waterfowl and turkey.

Wagonhound Land and Live-stock’s horse breeding program consists of more than 150 American Quarter Horses with a brood-mare band anchored by some of the most famous mares in the industry such as all-time leading reined cow horse producer Kings Masterpiece, AQHA World Show Junior Cutting Top 5; Little Tenina, NCHA Open Futurity, Derby, Classic and World Finals Champion; A Smart Little Gal, an NCHA World Champion producer; and Tassa Mia, an all-time leading cutting producer and dam of an NCHA Super Stakes Classic Open Champion as well as an NCHA World Champion.

General Manager Dustin Ewing says, “Wagonhound’s objective is to raise high-quality ranch horses for both ranch use and that of the public. The strong, well-proven Quarter Horse pedigrees within the breeding program not only support this goal but also routinely produce horses with the ability and talent to compete successfully in the most prestigious cutting, reining, reined cow horse and ranch competitions.” Wagonhound also owns and breeds top notch stallions such as WR This Cats Smart, a young sire whose get has already earned more than two million dollars in NCHA, NRCHA and AQHA events, as well as up and coming sire Genuine Masterpiece an AQHA & NRCHA Cow Horse World Champion.

Dustin Ewing reflected on the value of sponsoring the PCCHA saying, “Wagonhound is proud to support the Pacific Coast Cutting Association through a corporate sponsorship. The ranch strongly believes that it takes the entire equine community’s involvement through event participa-tion, sponsorships or volunteering to sustain associations; allowing the tradi-tion we are all passionate about.”
