Douglas, Wyoming, October 19, 2025 — In the final leg of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Finals, the second-to-last horse to perform was Fiddle And Steel’s full sister, Bowie Nights. She smoked a 225 fence run, topping the field by 5 points and had the crowd on their feet. It was a night that this incredible mare’s connections and the NRCHA fans will never forget.
In early August, trainer Veronica Swales guided Bowie Nights to the Southwest RCHA Open Futurity Reserve Championship but suffered from a horse accident in Las Vegas during the NSHA Futurity later that month. Unfortunately, she was unable to compete at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, so she called on her brother, John Swales, to assist her and compete in her place. The NRCHA Million Dollar Rider made the trip from Canada to Texas and did a phenomenal job carrying on his sister’s legacy on this talented mare owned by Bar One Land & Cattle that now has a lifetime earnings of $275,662.
As Bowie Nights was being crowned Champion, Veronica said to her husband, Clay, “I told you she was going to be a Futurity Champion.” Although Veronica was not the one showing her, she played a major role in setting the foundation and training that this mare possesses, making it possible for her brother to claim the title. This speaks volumes about the trainability and adaptability of the outstanding bloodlines these equine athletes carry.
Both Fiddle And Steel and Bowie Nights were bred by Russ & Janet Westfall, and are out of AQHA Reserve World Champion Senior Cutting Horse, LIL BIT RECKLESS ($231,124), which has now produced the earners of more than $1,120,000. She is also the dam of the 2025 American Performance Horseman Working Cow Horse Reserve Champion, 2024 NRCHA Open Stallion Stakes Champion and Open Hackamore Reserve World Champion SPANISH NIGHTS ($244,970).
