Wagonhound Student Competition
Colorado State University – April 2014
Students in the Horse Training and Sale Preparation Lab work hard all year to get their young horse ready not only for the sale, but for the Wagonhound Land & Livestock Co. Student Competition too. The Wagonhound Student Competition takes place every year on the Saturday before the sale. This year’s competition will be taking place on April 19, 2014 starting at 9 a.m at the B.W. Pickett Arena.
There are two portions to the Wagonhound Student Competition: Salesmanship and Riding.
In the Salesmanship portion of the competition, students will be asked to walk around the arena with their horse on foot. They will walk up to a microphone and be asked to tell the judges about their young horse including basic background information and pedigree information. Students are judged on their pattern, speech, and presentation of their horse. The goal of the Salesmanship portion of the competition is for students to ‘sell’ their horse to the judges.
In the riding portion of the competition, students will be able to show off their horses’s riding and handling abilities. The students will be asked to ride a pattern, which includes opening a gate, transitioning through all three gaits, turn on the hindquarters, etc. Students will be judged on the precision of their pattern, as time is not a factor.
When the Wagonhound Land & Livestock Co. Competition is complete, there will be an award ceremony for the students and the overall competition winner will be announced. We will be hosting a free BBQ dinner after the awards have been handed out.
