OUR PROGRAM
The horse program is managed to produce a versatile, high performance horse that will excel in the arena while maintaining the size and durability to withstand the pressures of ranch work. Leading cutting, reining, and reined cowhorse pedigrees dominate the premier group of mares chosen to base Wagonhound’s breeding plan upon. The results of this program can be seen in the ranch’s remuda which is comprised of “horsemen’s horses” of outstanding quality and conformation.
Mares are the heart of the Wagonhound horse program. Most of the mare band is comprised of performers with earnings in the NCHA, NRHA, or NRCHA. One such mare is Amanda Stargun by Playgun out of Amanda Starlight, by Grays Starlight. She has earned over $91,000 in the NCHA alone. After being bred to stallions such as WR This Cats Smart, High Brow Cat, and Smart Little Lena, her offspring will undoubtedly make a splash in the show ring as her first crop turns three this year. Perhaps the most remarkable mare in Wagonhound’s program is Little Tenina by the great Peppy San Badger. She is an NCHA Open Futurity Champion, Open Derby Champion, Open Classic Champion, and Open Finals Champion. Her wins gave her a hefty bankroll of over $394,000. Little Tenina is well on her way to becoming a legendary producer with her offspring’s earnings already exceeding $200,000.
Wagonhound is proud to own such a fine group of performance mares and is equally excited about its proven producers such as A Smart Little Gal by Smart Little Lena and out of a Freckles Playboy mare. Her foals include A Smart Little Rey with accrued earnings of $139,406 thus far. Wagonhound also owns the famous Tassa Mia who is an all time leading cutting producer whose offspring have earned more than $600,000.
These outstanding mares are often bred to high caliber outside standing stallions, and the ranch also crosses many of its mares on its own stallion, WR This Cats Smart. He is a 1999 sorrel stallion that has left his mark on the cutting industry. With such a royal pedigree, the stage was set for the stallion to emerge into the NCHA along with trainer, Tim Smith. At four, the stallion placed in many cutting events and was the San Diego Open Champion. At five, he continued on to be the Suncoast Winter Open Classic/Challenge Reserve Champion and make the Top Ten in the NCHA Super Stakes Open Classic. At the age of six, he claimed three champion titles including PCCHA Open Champion. He also placed third in the NCHA Super Stakes Open Classic and placed sixth in the NCHA Open Top Ten. Finally, in 2005, WR This Cats Smart became the NCHA Open Finals Champion winning the first and second Go-Rounds and the NCHA Bronze Award. He retired sound with earnings of $236,514 and as one of the most consistent major competitors in cutting horse history.
WR This Cats Smart now stands at stud at Valley Oak Ranch in Oakdale, California. He bred over 50 mares his first season in 2004, had a full book of 100 mares in 2005, over 200 mares in 2006, 2007, and again in 2008. He was the #3 Leading Active Sire of the 2007 NCHA Futurity Sales, and shared #1 Leading Sire by Median Bid with his sire High Brow Cat. His foals are just starting to show, and he already has a NCHA Futurity Semi Finalist, an earner of over $5,000, and an earner of $43,875 to his name. With the majority of his foals still to come, WR This Cats Smart looks to be as formidable a sire as he was a competitor. |
